Musical Director

Matthew Howes has been the Musical Director of Camerata Chamber Choir since 2020.  He studied music at Durham University, England and has conducted choirs and orchestras in England and New Zealand.  He is also Director of Music and Organist at St Mark's Anglican Church in Remuera.

The Choir

Camerata started in 1989 as Rothesay Singers and became The North Shore Camerata Incorporated in 2004.  Since then they have performed as The North Shore Camerata, Camerata Singers and, since 2016, Camerata Chamber Choir.

The choir’s repertoire is wide-ranging and includes sacred and secular works, spirituals, madrigals, carols, motets and New Zealand compositions.  Major works also feature, most recently Mozart's Mass in C minor and Duruflé's Requiem.

In the last few years the choir has performed works by many different composers, including Fauré, Handel, Mozart, Bach, Duruflé, John Rutter, Chris Artley, Morten Lauridsen, Eric Whitacre, Ola Gjeilo and Eriks Esenvald.

Rehearsals are held on Monday nights (7pm - 9pm) at St George's Church in Takapuna, and Camerata performs three major concerts every year, often at St George's Church and, more recently, at St Matthew-in-the-City.
